The Pig and I are deeply grateful to be surrounded by family members and friends who embrace philanthropy. Giving is within our collective core. So when we stumbled upon Katherine Marie’s 52 Smiles one Spring day, it was inevitable we would follow her lead.
A photographer and mother of four, Katherine and her husband decided to launch a family project called 52 Smiles: a commitment to complete one out-of-the-ordinary kindness act each week for one full year in 2011.
“I really think it helped build a foundation of KINDNESS, concern and generosity for my kids.” Katherine wrote in a recent email to us.
Inspired by Katherine’s commitment to kindness, the Pig and I started discussing the idea with friends and family. It started in low. And then began to grow. The response from everyone was quite moving.
This is gonna be HUGE!
The first order of business: a name for the project. We were stuck on 52 Smiles, a lovely name for such an endeavor. But we wanted to think of something that was very much our own. So we rallied the troops and asked for their ideas. Bihl’s Ark (Ark: acts of random kindness) and Occupy Hearts were in the running. Nevertheless, the name for our commitment was chosen by the masses:
The BIHL Project: Believe in Hope & Love
Our commitment is very much the same as Katherine’s: perform one out-of-the-ordinary kindness act each week for one full year.
We’re excited to share our ideas and stories with you throughout the year. And if you’re feeling unfettered, we encourage you to do the same. Why share? We hope it will inspire people all over the world, like Katherine and her family inspired us.
Got any superhero pay it forward ideas or stories?
